5 Senior House Officers in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Mater Hospital Brisbane

14 non-rotational SHO positions at Mater Hospital Brisbane Emergency Department and 12 non-rotational SHO positions at Mater Hospital Springfield Emergency Department

Surgical streaming across Mater Hospital Brisbane and Mater Hospital Springfield, providing structured prevocational training for RMOs wanting to apply for the SET program with RACS

Intern opportunities

Interns rotate through Mater Hospital Brisbane with secondments offered to the Queensland Children’s Hospital for Paediatric rotations. Rotation preferences are considered.

Specialty and subspeciality terms are available within Medicine and Surgery, Emergency Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Neonatology and Paediatrics.

Resident Medical Officer Opportunities (PGY2 and PGY3)

Resident Medical Officer (RMO)

Resident Medical Officers (RMO) will rotate through Mater Hospital Brisbane and Mater Hospital Springfield, with secondments offered to the Queensland Children’s Hospital for Paediatric rotations. Rotation preferences are considered.

Medical rotations: 
Cardiology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, General Medicine, Geriatrics, Haematology, Infectious Disease, Neurology, Oncology and Palliative Care, Renal and Respiratory Medicine and Ward Call

Surgical rotations: 
Breast and Endocrine Surgery, Colorectal Surgery, ENT/MaxFac Surgery, Gynaecological Oncology, Orthopaedic Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Upper GI/HPB Surgery, Urology and Vascular Surgery and Ward Call

Critical Care rotations:
Anaesthetics, Emergency Medicine and ICU

Other rotations:
Neonatology, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Paediatric secondments

Our Medical Workforce and Education teams provide a comprehensive range of support, education and development opportunities. Critical Care Senior House Officer (CCSHO)

We have 14 Critical Care Senior House Officer (CCSHO) positions available, recruited via the RMO campaign. 

Our CCSHOs participate in a 13-week rotating roster which includes two weeks in anaesthetics, five weeks in ICU, two weeks in emergency medicine and four weeks on afterhours ward call shifts at Mater Private Hospital Brisbane.

Applicants for a CCSHO position must apply via the RMO campaign and preference the Mater role as first preference. Select:

Emergency Medicine – Senior House Officer

The Emergency Department will recruit up to 22 Senior House Officer positions via the RMO campaign each medical year. 

How to apply

Each clinical year, the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department recruit five Senior Resident Medical Officers.

Registrar/Principal House Officer

We have a wide variety of Principal House Officer and Registrar positions available via the RMO campaign.

Please familiarise yourself with the various Mater specialty positions listed on the campaign. If you have any questions about these positions, please contact the relevant Department Administration Officer directly or email Medical Workforce and your email will be passed to the relevant department.

Our facilities

Mater is home to Australia's largest maternity service, Queensland’s first purpose-built 24/7 Pregnancy Assessment Centre and an internationally renowned Maternal Fetal Medicine Service. With a state-of-the-art Neonatal Critical Care Unit providing lifesaving care for premature and critically ill newborns, Mater offers an unparalleled learning experience in both adult, maternity and paediatric care.

Mater Hospital Brisbane offers a 24-hour adult Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit (ICU), coronary care units, day surgery, oncology, and specialised medical and surgical units. 

Mater Hospital Springfield, opening in early 2026, is Queensland's newest public hospital. Be one of the first to train in this new, contemporary nine‑storey facility with an Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit, Paediatric and Maternity Units and direct access to Mater Private Hospital Springfield.

Compensation and benefits

Based on your classification and level as outlined in the current Mater RMO Enterprise Agreement. Mater offers a protected salary for a minimum 38-hour work week and includes superannuation, overtime, and penalty pay.

Accrue five weeks of paid annual leave and 10 days of paid sick leave per year (pro-rated based on your employment tenure).

Full-time Junior House Officers, Senior House Officers, Principal House Officers, and Registrars are entitled to accrue 60.8 hours of professional development leave (PDL) per year (pro-rated), on top of existing exam leave entitlements detailed in the Mater RMO Enterprise Agreement. Mater supports you in using your PDL during your scheduled work hours or outside of them.

Career development

Mater offers vocational training subsidy of up to $3,000 per year to Medical Officers who are enrolled and actively participating in a vocational training program.

For full-time Junior House Officers and Senior House Officers not currently in a formal training program, Mater provides a professional development reimbursement of up to $1,500 per year to help cover professional development costs.
