Catherine’s House for Mothers, Babies and Families is Queensland’s first integrated perinatal mental health centre.
It has been co-designed by parents with lived experience and a multidisciplinary team of health professionals to deliver specialised care to parents experiencing depression, anxiety and other mental health challenges in the first year of their baby’s arrival.
Located alongside Mater Mothers’ Hospital at South Brisbane, Catherine’s House has been built with community donations to Mater Foundation and is a dedicated space for healing, recovery and connection.

The Service
Catherine’s House for Mothers, Babies and Families is Queensland’s first integrated perinatal mental health service, featuring a dedicated In-patient Unit with 10 rooms.
There are eight rooms for public patients and two for private patients where parents can stay with their babies while receiving treatment and care.
The In-patient Unit delivers specialist support for parents experiencing severe depression, anxiety and other mental health diagnoses in the first year of their baby’s arrival.
Co-designed by parents with lived experience and a multidisciplinary team of health professionals, the In-patient Unit offers parents and families a safe space for healing, recovery and connection while improving their mental health and relationship with their baby.

- Parent Support Centre for mothers and babies up to six months after birth
- Parent Aide Unit delivering a home visiting service to help improve infant-parent relationships
- Day Programs including a wide range of individual and group therapy treatments for public and private patients

Whether you access care from the public health system or have private health insurance, Catherine’s House for Mothers, Babies and Families delivers a range of services for all women.
Parents can stay with their babies at the Catherine’s House dedicated In-patient Unit while receiving support and treatment from our specialist team of mental health clinicians including psychiatrists, allied health, nurses, peer workers and other professionals.
Families have access to a wide range of tailored programs and services for parents and babies.
Eligibility criteria
Catherine’s House In-patient Unit is available to eligible Queensland parents who meet the following criteria:
- mental healthcare needs that cannot be adequately met by community care;
- a diagnosis of:
- severe depression;
- severe anxiety;
- schizophrenia;
- psychosis including postpartum psychosis;
- bipolar affective disorder; or
- complex mental health problems which may include a history of trauma, personality disorder or (past but not current) substance misuse in remission that is impacting significantly on parenting;
- being the primary carer of a baby / babies under the age of 12 months;
- willing to focus on parenting confidence or attachment relationship in the context of mental health symptoms.

Parents can be referred to Catherine’s House In-patient Unit by:
- Mental health clinicians

- Sunshine Coast
- Mackay
- Townsville
- North West
- Children's Health Queensland
