Patients in Bundaberg and the Wide Bay region will benefit from improved access to specialist spinal care, with orthopaedic surgeon Dr John Kinyanjui now consulting at Mater Private Hospital Bundaberg.
Dr Kinyanjui brings subspecialty expertise in spinal surgery, with his experience spanning the surgical management of degenerative spinal conditions, trauma and tumours.
Dr Kinyanjui said his decision to consult in Bundaberg would meet a clear need in the region.
“There are no spine services in the public hospital system in Bundaberg, and patients often have to travel to the Sunshine Coast or Brisbane for care,” Dr Kinyanjui said.
“By consulting locally, we’re helping reduce wait times and travel burdens as well as ensuring patients are closer to their support systems during recovery.
“We also have plans to offer spinal surgeries at Mater Private Hospital Bundaberg in the future, which will improve patient care in the region.”
Having grown up on the outskirts of Nairobi, in Kenya, Dr Kinyanjui is passionate about improving access to care in underserved communities. He regularly supports outreach efforts in Kenya, taking equipment and expertise back to his home country.
His connection to Bundaberg was fostered through mentorship with Dr Abdul Chaudhry, a fellow orthopaedic surgeon at Mater Private Hospital Bundaberg.
“I’ve long had a connection with Bundaberg through Dr Chaudhry, and I’ve seen firsthand the high level of need in this region,” Dr Kinyanjui said.
“I’m proud to be part of a team that’s helping make specialist spinal care more accessible for regional Queenslanders.”
Mater Private Hospital Bundaberg General Manager Catherine Hackney welcomed Dr Kinyanjui’s arrival.
