Frequently Asked Questions
Does Mater sponsor for all jobs across the hospital?
Mater does not offer visa sponsorship for all roles. Sponsorship is considered on a case-by-case basis, depending on factors such as:
- Workforce demand and skills shortages
- Role criticality and clinical/non-clinical requirements
- Availability of suitably qualified Australian applicants
Roles that are harder to fill locally (for example, certain clinical or specialist positions) are more likely to be considered for sponsorship. Please review our Careers Website to see what roles are currently offering sponsorship
What visa types will Mater engage in?
Where sponsorship is supported, Mater may engage under relevant Australian skilled migration pathways, such as:
- Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa (subclass 482)
- Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) visa (subclass 186) (in eligible circumstances)
- Other appropriate skilled visa pathways aligned with workforce needs
All sponsorship arrangements must meet Australian Government requirements, including occupation eligibility, skills assessment, and registration where applicable.
What steps can I take to improve my chances of being identified as a strong candidate for sponsorship?
To strengthen your application and potential sponsorship eligibility, we recommend that you:
Ensure role alignment
- Apply for roles that closely match your qualifications, skills, and experience
- Focus on areas where there is known demand or shortage
Maintain relevant registration and compliance
- Hold (or be eligible for) Australian registration where required (eg AHPRA for clinical roles)
- Ensure your qualifications are recognised in Australia
- Hold or be ready to secure your ANMAC testing results
Demonstrate experience and capability
- Highlight specialised skills, clinical experience, or niche expertise
- Provide evidence of strong performance, achievements, and professional development
Meet visa readiness requirements
- Have up-to-date documentation (CV, references, certifications)
- Demonstrate English language proficiency where required
- Be prepared to meet visa eligibility criteria
Stand out in your application
- Tailor your resume and cover letter to the role
- Clearly articulate your interest in working with Mater and contributing to patient care
Does Mater offer relocation assistance?
Mater will offer relocation assistance on a case-by-case basis, in line with our Relocation Procedure.
Why does Mater sponsor?
Mater offers visa sponsorship to support the delivery of safe, high-quality care when there is a genuine workforce need that cannot be met locally. Sponsorship helps us attract skilled professionals with the experience and expertise required to fill critical roles.
We typically consider sponsorship when:
- There is a confirmed skills shortage or ongoing vacancy in a role
- The position is essential to patient care or service delivery
- We have been unable to recruit a suitably qualified Australian candidate
- The candidate has highly relevant skills, qualifications, and experience aligned to the role
- The role and candidate meet Australian Government sponsorship and visa requirements
Sponsorship is not guaranteed and is assessed on a case-by-case basis, balancing workforce needs, regulatory requirements, and long-term service sustainability.
