It will be an extra special first Father’s Day for Christian Agapiou after his son, Sonny, decided to arrive 6 weeks earlier than expected.
Sonny was due on 30 September but decided he was ready to enter the world at 34 weeks, weighing 2380 grams.
“He’s doing really well,” said Mr Agapiou.
“The early arrival was a bit scary – we weren’t really prepared but it all went well and we’re very lucky.
“We thought the name was a sweet positive name – reminds us of sunshine.”
Little Sonny has been receiving around-the-clock care in the special care nursery at Mater Mothers’ Private Townsville.
“Hopefully we’ll have him home in a week or so,” said Mr Agapiou.
“The nurses have been amazing and we’ve felt extremely supported.”
Celebrating Father’s Day hadn’t really crossed Mr Agapiou’s mind but he said he will most likely spend the day at the hospital, with his wife Bree and the little boy.
“I wasn’t supposed to get this one I was supposed to catch the next one,” said Mr Agapiou.
“Haven’t thought about it too much but it will be nice to all be together.
“Sonny is definitely the best gift.”
Mater Mothers’ North Queensland Midwifery and Nursing Unit Manager, Rebekah Barrie, said a number of families would be celebrating their first Father's Day at the hospital.
