How to refer a patient to a specialist
General practitioners may refer a patient to any accredited Mater Visiting Medical Officer (VMO) via a referral. The referral must include relevant clinical information about the patient's condition for investigation, opinion, treatment and management.
Elective admissions
Elective admissions are arranged through an accredited VMO at Mater. Typically, a GP would refer a patient for consultation to a private specialist. From there, elective admissions are arranged if deemed necessary by the VMO.
Emergency referrals
Mater Private Emergency Care Centre's are located across Queensland at South Brisbane, Townsville, Rockhampton and Mackay. GP and QAS priority hotline (Mater Private Emergency Care Centre Brisbane)
GPs and the Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) requiring immediate advice and assistance for patients, can telephone MPECC and speak directly with a senior doctor via a dedicated hotline on 07 3163 1030. This hotline is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Mater Private Hospital Brisbane Rehabilitation Unit
Mater Private Hospital Brisbane Rehabilitation Unit provides inpatient and day therapy rehabilitation programs and support.
Patients may be referred to rehabilitation after acute illness or injury. Other circumstances may be due to longer term or chronic conditions that have been managed at home and a period of rehabilitation may be of benefit.
Referrals
To refer a patient to the Rehabilitation Unit in South Brisbane download the Rehabilitation Unit Brisbane referral form complete, then email the rehabilitation unit.
Patients referred to the unit are assessed for their suitability for program participation. A preadmission medical review is undertaken for all patients and recommendations made regarding rehabilitation needs or options.

Queensland Centre of Excellence in Intellectual Disability and Autism Health (QCEIDAH)
Private psychology sessions are available through QCEIDAH via referral. These services are facilitated by a registered clinical psychologist from Mater Young Adult Health Centre Brisbane. Services include:
- Cognitive and functional assessments
- Autism assessments (ADOS-2)
- Management of anxiety, depression and other mental health difficulties
- Strategies for coping with stress, trauma and adjustment issues
- Promoting the development and improvement of social interaction skills
- Working to overcome relationship difficulties
- Skill building in time management, planning and organisation
- Individually targeted sessions for discrete issues such as sleep problems
Mater is a registered NDIS provider of therapeutic supports. QCEIDAH can offer psychological therapeutic support services to people aged 16 years and over covered by NDIS funding packages.

Emotional Health Unit
The Emotional Health Unit at Mater provides access to professionals in psychiatry, psychology and social work for young adults aged 16-25 with a broad range of mental health issues.
Medicare rebates are available for patients who have a GP Mental Health Treatment Plan or referral from a psychiatrist or paediatrician.
The Emotional Health Unit consists of:
- Amanda Flynn Clinic: private mental health inpatient unit for young adults who require in hospital care during recovery
- Recovery College: provides therapeutic programs with a focus on recovery and learning new skills for a range of different issues affecting young people’s mental health
- Consulting suites: young adults can access treatment and therapy from a range of private mental health clinicians
Referrals
For direct referrals to the Amanda Flynn Clinic inpatient unit please fax your referral to 07 3163 6122 or email EHU made to the attention of the ‘Admitting Psychiatrist’.
Please refer private patients directly to a consulting medical professional in the Emotional Health Unit. Patients on a GP Mental Health Treatment Plan or referral are eligible for Medicare rebates. Patients without a referral will not be eligible for a Medicare rebate.
Fees and rebates
If you would like your patient to receive a Medicare rebate you will need to complete a GP Mental Health Treatment Plan as part of the referral process. Referrals from paediatricians and psychiatrists also attract a rebate.
The fees charged by the health professionals are set by the individual practitioners and are payable to them at the time of consultation. EFTPOS facilities are available.
Medicare or health fund rebates may be claimed if eligible.
Additional fees may apply for longer appointments and report writing however the health professional will inform the patient if this is likely to occur.
