
Comprehensive emergency care
Mater Private Emergency Department is a fee-for-service emergency centre staffed by highly experienced emergency doctors and nurses.
It provides prompt assessment and treatment for patients with urgent medical conditions, ensuring high quality care when it matters most.
Open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the centre offers emergency services that complement - but do not replace - the care provided by general practitioners (GPs) and specialists.
With 95 per cent of patients seen within 30 minutes, the team is committed to delivering fast, effective, and compassionate care. Patients may self-present or be referred by a GP or medical specialist.
The Emergency Department is operated by Private Emergency Health Australia (PEHA) and located at Mater Private Hospital Brisbane.
What to expect
On arrival you will be greeted by one of our reception staff who will organise for an experienced registered nurse to triage you.
Please ensure to inform them of any allergies, past health problems or current medications taken that may help us with your care. This will assist us in treating you in the order of your clinical urgency.
Our centre is fully equipped to triage all paediatric and adult patients with access to onsite specialists, X-ray, Mater Private CardioVascular Unit, pathology and if necessary, admission to hospital for further tests or a procedure in theatre.
Mater Private Emergency Department and CardioVascular Unit are also closely linked to Mater Private Coronary Care Unit providing a level of care that is second to none for people with cardiac and vascular related illness.
Emergency centre information
Fees
Mater Private Hospital Brisbane is a private, not-for-profit hospital. To attend the emergency department, the hospital charges an upfront fee of $295 for an adult and $270 for a child 15 years and under. This fee is not claimable from Medicare or private health insurance. The doctor will bulk-bill Medicare for your care.
There will be no fee charged for patients returning to the Emergency Department with the same condition, within a 3-day period.
Out-of-pocket expenses
If you require radiology (x-rays, CT, MRI) or pathology (blood tests) there may be additional out-of-pocket costs. Out-of-pocket hospital fees are not claimable under Medicare or private health insurance.
DVA and workers compensation
DVA Gold Card holders and approved Workcover insurance will not incur an out-of-pocket expense.
Fees for services such as x-rays and pathology may incur additional out-of-pocket costs. The service provider will send you an additional account for these services, however you may be able to claim some of these fees from Medicare.
Discharge
On discharge your doctor will advise you about your follow-up care which may include scripts, referral to a specialist or request for further tests. Please feel free to contact us if you have any concerns or further information.
GP and QAS priority hotline
GPs and the Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS), requiring immediate advice and assistance for patients, can telephone MECC and speak directly with a senior doctor via a dedicated hotline on 07 3163 1030. This hotline is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
