On the day of my appointment

Checking in to your specialist outpatient clinic

Please arrive at the location of your clinic, as outlined in your confirmation SMS/letter, 15 minutes before your appointment.

  • Check in with the outpatient clinic reception staff when you arrive. We'll check your contact details, GP details, Medicare Card and concession cards.
  • You will be directed to a seating area near your clinic to wait.

How long will my appointment take?

Although we endeavour to see all patients at their scheduled appointment time, unfortunately delays can occur. These usually occur because a patient with an urgent clinical need must be seen without delay, resulting in other scheduled appointments being delayed.

  • Usually there are multiple clinics running at the same time. For this reason, you may notice that other patients are called in ahead of you. This can happen because different clinics take different amounts of time to see patients.
  • Patients are seen based on their scheduled appointment times. Arriving early does not guarantee that you will be seen sooner.

Please allow 2-3 hours for your appointment and bring reading materials, quiet activities and refreshments to make your wait more comfortable.

During your appointment

  • At your first appointment your clinical specialist will discuss with you your health concerns.

  • You may require an examination or further tests.

  • You can ask the clinical specialist questions at any time. If you don’t understand anything they tell you, ask them to explain it again.
  • If you need a medical certificate for work, don't forget to ask during your appointment.

After your appointment

At the end of your appointment, please make sure you return to the reception desk to ‘check out'. If you need another appointment, the receptionist will either book this for you or will let you know you'll get an appointment letter or SMS appointment offer 6 weeks prior.

If your doctor decides you need a surgery or procedure, there will be some additional paperwork to fill out. You may also need to attend a pre-admission appointment prior to going home. Once everything is complete, you'll be added to the elective surgery or procedure wait list. You'll be sent a letter to confirm you're on the elective surgery or procedural wait list.
