My Mater Midwife

When you choose to have your baby at Mater Mothers’ Private Brisbane, you have the benefit of choosing from a number of different models of care offered by our obstetricians and midwives. The My Mater Midwife program is one of the many models of care available to you at Mater Mothers’ Private Brisbane.

As part of this program, a Mater midwife will support you throughout your journey in partnership with your chosen obstetrician. Your dedicated Mater midwife will be there for you during your pregnancy, your labour, the birth of your baby, and during the early weeks after your child is born.

Your Mater midwife will care for you, answer your calls and questions in partnership with your obstetrician, and provide you with support every step of the way.

Our team

At Mater, we work with some of Australia’s leading obstetricians, who strive to deliver care that is right for you.

When you meet with your obstetrician at your first antenatal visit, you can discuss with them if the My Mater Midwife program is right for you.

If the answer is yes, then your obstetrician will introduce you to their My Mater Midwife partner.

Our service

Developed in consultation with our specialist obstetricians and midwives, the My Mater Midwife program offers mums-to-be more choice when it comes to having your baby at Mater Mothers’ Private Brisbane.

The My Mater Midwife program is centred on making sure you receive the support you need from the moment you choose to have your baby with us through to those first few weeks after your baby is born.

When you choose the My Mater Midwife program, your Mater midwife will provide you with a booking visit, up to seven antenatal visits, attendance at birth, and up to four postnatal visits.  It’s all about giving you the support you need from pregnancy through to early parenthood.

There may be times that your midwife isn’t available due to safe work hours. If your midwife isn’t available, she will arrange for your care to be handed over to a trusted member of the team. You will have the opportunity to meet other midwives from the team during your pregnancy so that you can feel safe and confident in your care team, no matter the circumstances

Is the My Mater Midwife program suitable for all women?

At Mater, we work with some of Australia’s leading obstetricians, who each strive to deliver care that is right for you.

As the My Mater Midwife program is an addition to private care with your obstetrician, the decision as to whether or not to add My Mater Midwife into your care, is an important discussion for you to have with your obstetrician.

Can I access the My Mater Midwife program with my private health insurance?

No. Private health insurance does not currently cover this program.

I am a self-funded private patient. Can I access the My Mater Midwife program?

Yes, so long as you hold a Medicare card.

I'm interested. How can I access the My Mater Midwife program?

Speak with your obstetrician.

When you meet with your obstetrician at your first antenatal visit, you can discuss with them if the My Mater Midwife program is right for you.

If the answer is yes, then your obstetrician will introduce you to their My Mater Midwife partner.

As part of this program, will my midwife be there for me during labour?

Yes. As part of this program, your dedicated Mater midwife, with whom you will have shared your pregnancy journey, will be there for you alongside your obstetrician for the birth of your baby.

There may be times that your midwife isn’t available due to safe work hours. If your midwife isn’t available, she will arrange for your care to be handed over to a trusted member of the team. You will have the opportunity to meet other midwives in the team during your pregnancy.

What will my Mater midwife do if I choose a planned caesarian section?

Your Mater midwife will be there when you arrive at hospital. They will help you get ready, be with you in theatre, in recovery, and help settle you into your private room at Mater Mothers’ Private Brisbane.

What will my Mater midwife do if I need a caesarian section during labour?

Your Mater midwife will be there for you during labour.  If it becomes necessary for baby to be born by caesarean section, your Mater midwife will help you get ready for theatre and be with you and your partner during the operation, and during the first few hours after baby is born.

What will my Mater midwife do if I have a concern after-hours?

Your Mater midwife will be able to answer your call, liaise with your obstetrician, and be there to see you if you need to present to Mater Mothers 24/7 Pregnancy Assessment Centre.

Our midwives do sometimes take holidays or time-off. That’s why they all work with a ‘buddy’ who you will get to meet …just in case.  In our experience though, it is uncommon for you to not have your Mater midwife with you when baby arrives.

What will happen if my midwife is on a day off or attending another birth?

Our midwives take time off in keeping with a safe work place. You can call your midwife’s phone any time and the call will divert through to another member of the team if your midwife is unavailable.

There are also times that the events of a birth may require two or more midwives to provide care. In these cases your midwife will hand over to a trusted member of the team and you will be cared for with the same degree of attention and consideration that you are used to.

We will provide opportunities for you to meet all of the members of the midwifery team during your pregnancy so that you feel safe and cared for in ways that keep you at the centre of your birth experience.
