The Mater Epilepsy Unit specialises in the evaluation and treatment of focal, drug resistant epilepsies. One of the main aspects of presurgical evaluation is video-electroencephalography (EEG) monitoring to record seizures, along with detailed brain imaging and neuropsychological assessment. In some patients, more detailed recording may be required using intracerebral monitoring, the stereo-EEG method, to localise the source of seizures within the brain.  

Our team is made up of epileptologists, neurosurgeons, EEG scientists, epilepsy nurses, neuropsychiatrists, neuropsychologists, clinical psychologists and speech pathologists who all work together to provide the highest level of care in the diagnosis and treatment of focal epilepsy.

The Mater Memory and Cognitive Disorders Clinic is the first cognitive neurology clinic to be established in Queensland. The clinic, under the leadership of Professor Peter Nestor, takes referrals from specialists and has particular focus on degenerative forms of suspected dementia including:

Queensland Mater Neurosciences Centre offers a dedicated Stroke Unit, purpose-designed for the optimal treatment of stroke patients. Our seven-bed inpatient facility is managed by a dedicated Stroke Coordinator and provides specialised multi-disciplinary care and onsite rehabilitation services.

Through links with the Queensland Stroke Association and the National Stroke Foundation, Mater's Stroke Unit aims to facilitate the optimal assessment, management and rehabilitation of stroke patients.

The establishment of Mater's Stroke Unit has been made possible thanks to the generous support of the Denis and Eileen McEniery Fund, in recognition of four generations of care provided by Mater to the McEniery family. Mater recognises the significant difference this gift will make in the lives of stroke patients and their families, and to the Queensland community.

Endoscopic spine surgery (ESS) is used to treat spinal disorders and conditions including disc herniation, spinal stenosis and degenerative disc disease requiring spinal stabilisation. It’s a minimally invasive procedure designed to facilitate a quicker recovery time. This type of surgery uses much smaller incisions of just 1-2cm, compared to standard surgery, meaning less pain and faster recovery. 

Modern navigation technology like Joimax allows surgeons at Mater Private Hospital Gold Coas to visualise the position of the endoscopic instruments as they are placed in the patient’s body, reducing radiation exposure and surgical personnel as there is less reliance on x-rays.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) involves implanting electrodes within areas of the brain. The electrodes produce electrical impulses that affect brain activity to treat certain medical conditions. The electrical impulses also can affect cells and chemicals within the brain that cause medical conditions.

The amount of stimulation in deep brain stimulation is controlled by a pacemaker-like device placed under the skin in the upper chest. A wire that travels under the skin connects this device to the electrodes in the brain.

Deep brain stimulation is commonly used to treat a number of conditions, such as:

• Parkinson's disease.
• Essential tremor.
• Conditions that cause dystonia, such as Meige syndrome.
• Epilepsy.
• Tourette syndrome.
• Obsessive-compulsive disorder.
