Associate Professor Philip Townend is an expert in upper gastrointestinal and general surgery. After graduating in medicine from the University of New South Wales in 2007, Associate Professor Townend completed his internship and residency training in Newcastle. He then travelled to South Africa where he completed a trauma surgery residency at Stanger Hospital in KwaZulu-Natal.

Associate Professor Townend successfully gained a position on the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Surgical Education and Training (SET) program in general surgery, based at Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney. During this time, he developed a particular interest in complex upper gastrointestinal surgery.

After obtaining his FRACS in general surgery in 2017, he undertook further fellowship training in hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) surgery, gaining experience in high-volume complex pancreatic and liver surgery at Royal North Shore Hospital. He also completed an upper gastrointestinal surgery fellowship at Canberra Hospital in the ACT.

In 2018, Associate Professor Townend was one of six successful candidates across Australia and New Zealand selected for a two-year ANZGOSA (Australia and New Zealand Gastric and Oesophageal Surgery Association) Fellowship. He completed this training at Bankstown and Liverpool Hospitals in Sydney with a particular focus on oesophagogastric and hepatopancreatobiliary surgery.

In 2019, Associate Professor Townend relocated with his family to the United Kingdom where he worked as an oesophagogastric fellow at the prestigious Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, performing high-volume oesophagogastric surgery.

He commenced consultant practice at Mater Private Hospital Gold Coast in 2020. Throughout his training and consultant career, Associate Professor Townend has authored multiple research papers, some of which have received awards, and has presented his work in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, the United States and Europe.

Associate Professor Townend serves on local, national and international committees, contributing to improvements in patient care and supporting research initiatives. He was appointed Associate Professor at Griffith University School of Medicine and Dentistry in 2021 in recognition of his contributions to research and teaching.
