Dr Adrian Maher

Dr Adrian Maher is an interventional gastroenterologist specialising in diagnostic and therapeutic interventional endoscopy, as well as high quality screening procedures for the prevention of cancer, practising at Mater Private Hospital Brisbane.

Dr Maher completed his Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine degrees at Griffith University.

Upon completion of these studies, he received a University Medal and The Dean's Medallion, awarded to the Dux of Medicine.

Dr Maher has also completed a Masters of Internal Medicine at the University of Sydney.

He completed his physician training at Toowoomba Hospital and Greenslopes Private Hospital before going on to specialist training in gastroenterology and hepatology at Mater Hospital Brisbane and Princess Alexandra Hospital.

After this, he undertook a two-year fellowship in interventional endoscopy at Princess Alexandra Hospital.

Dr Maher has also completed an observership at the world-class Harvard Medical School, learning further advanced endoscopic ultrasound techniques including endoscopically guided liver biopsy, portal pressure gradients (crucial in assessing liver health) and variceal coiling (used to treat bleeding oesophageal varices).

Dr Maher has extensive experience in interventional upper endoscopy and colonoscopy including the management of Barrett’s oesophagus, complex polypectomy and endoscopic repair of surgical complications.

He also has expertise in Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography or ERCP (used to examine the ducts of the gallbladder, pancreas and liver), endoscopic ultrasound and the complex endoscopic management of hepatobiliary disorders.

Dr Maher is a lecturer at The University of Queensland Medical School where he is actively involved in research and teaching medical students.
