Biography

Dr Akhitesh Swaminathan is an Australasian-trained Gastroenterologist with advanced expertise in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), consulting and operating at Mater Private Hospital Redland.

He graduated from the University of Otago, New Zealand in 2013 and completed specialist training in Christchurch and Auckland, earning Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) in 2023.

Dr Swaminathan undertook subspecialist training in IBD at The Alfred Hospital, Melbourne, where he gained extensive experience managing complex cases within a multidisciplinary team and developed skills in gastrointestinal ultrasound.

In 2024, he completed a PhD at the University of Otago, with research focused on non-invasive disease assessment and holistic approaches to IBD management.

Passionate about research and education, Dr Swaminathan has published widely, presented at national and international conferences, and contributed to clinical trials of emerging therapies.

He holds academic appointments as a Research Fellow at the University of Otago and Senior Lecturer at Griffith University, Queensland. He is also actively involved in teaching medical students, residents, and gastroenterology trainees.
