Dr Brendan O’Connor

Minimally invasive (laparoscopic) surgery and upper GI endoscopy, chest wall and thoracic conditions, general paediatric surgery, skin and soft tissue conditions, acute paediatric surgical conditions, neonatal surgery and antenatal counselling.

Dr Brendan O'Connor is a paediatric surgeon with extensive international training and expertise across all areas of general paediatric surgery, consulting and operating at Mater Private Hospital Mackay. 

He provides surgical care for babies, infants, children and adolescents, with particular interests in neonatal surgery, minimally invasive surgery and the management of common and complex childhood surgical conditions. 

He completed his medical degree at University College Cork in Ireland before undertaking specialist paediatric surgical training across leading children's hospitals in Ireland, Australia and the United Kingdom. 

He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Paediatric Surgery and a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and has held senior positions at Children's Health Ireland in Dublin, The Royal Children's Hospital Melbourne, and Sheffield Children's NHS Foundation Trust in the United Kingdom. 

Dr O'Connor holds a Master of Science in Human Factors in Patient Safety and a Master in Surgery in Surgical Science, both awarded with First Class Honours. 

Alongside his clinical work, Dr O'Connor is actively involved in teaching, research and patient safety. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, lectures regularly to healthcare professionals and medical students, and has received awards recognising his contribution to paediatric surgery. 

Dr O'Connor is passionate about improving access to paediatric surgical services across North Queensland and ensuring children, parents and caregivers feel informed and supported throughout their care.
