Biography
Dr Ela Hyland is an Australian-trained paediatric surgeon consulting at Mater Private Hospital Townsville.
She manages a broad range of paediatric surgical conditions, including genitoinguinal conditions, urology, colorectal disorders, skin lesions, appendicitis, abdominal wall hernias, gastrostomy insertion, fundoplication, and gallbladder disease, and performs common procedures including, tongue-tie release, skin lesion excision, circumcision, scar management, ingrown toenail surgery, and treatment of warts.
Dr Hyland also provides antenatal consultations for hydronephrosis and other congenital conditions identified during pregnancy, helping families navigate diagnosis and postnatal management with clear guidance and continuity of care.
Dr Hyland completed her medical degrees at the University of Tasmania, graduating with a Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery with Honours in 2009 and a Bachelor of Medical Science in 2008. She later completed a Diploma of Child Health through the University of Sydney in 2013, followed by a Master of Surgery (Paediatric Surgery) from the University of Sydney in 2014. She was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in Paediatric Surgery in 2024.
Dr Hyland undertook specialist training at leading paediatric tertiary centres across Australia, including Queensland Children’s Hospital and The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. She also completed a dedicated two-year fellowship in paediatric burns, developing expertise in paediatric burns care, hypertrophic scarring, scar management, and vascular anomalies including infantile haemangiomas.
Raised in regional New South Wales, Dr Hyland has a strong commitment to improving access to specialist paediatric surgical care for children and families living in rural and regional communities.
She is committed to delivering timely, high-quality, and accessible paediatric surgical care for children throughout North Queensland, with a focus on reducing wait times and minimising unnecessary travel and healthcare costs for families.
