Knee and hip replacement, trauma and fracture care and knee reconstruction

Dr John McNicholl is a Brisbane-based orthopaedic surgeon who sees private patients at rooms within the Brisbane Hip Clinic in Fortitude Valley and operates at Mater Private Hospital Brisbane.

Dr McNicholl’s subspecialty practice focuses on disorders of the hip, with particular interest in hip arthroscopy, hip resurfacing, direct anterior approach (DAA) hip replacement, and complex and revision hip replacement surgery.

Prior to returning to Brisbane, Dr McNicholl worked as a Staff Specialist and Acting Clinical Director of Orthopaedic Surgery at Cairns Hospital. During this time, he also held an academic appointment as a Senior Lecturer at James Cook University.

Dr McNicholl undertook advanced subspecialty training in the United Kingdom, working as the Clinical Fellow in Arthroplasty at St George’s Hospital, one of London’s oldest hospitals. While in London, Dr McNicholl also worked at the Southwest London Elective Orthopaedic Centre, the United Kingdom’s highest-volume joint replacement centre. His fellowship focused particularly on complex and revision hip and knee replacement surgery.

In addition to his private practice, he holds an appointment as a Senior Medical Officer  at Mater Hospital Brisbane, where he treats public patients. He also holds an academic appointment as a Senior Lecturer at The University of Queensland and regularly teaches medical students at Mater Hospital Brisbane.

Dr McNicholl completed his specialist surgical training at major hospitals across Australia, including St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne, the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, The Prince Charles Hospital, the Queensland Children’s Hospital and Mater Hospital Brisbane. During his training, he served as the Queensland representative of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Trainees’ Association (RACSTA).

He obtained his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from James Cook University, where he developed his early interest in orthopaedic surgery. During his medical studies, he was awarded the university’s nomination to the Australian Orthopaedic Association’s annual undergraduate workshop.

Dr McNicholl’s medical career is underpinned by a strong commitment to service and the aspiration to be a “man for others”, reflecting the central ethos of his Jesuit education at St Ignatius’ College Riverview, Sydney.
