Dr Kelvin Choo

Laparoscopy; paediatric oncology; and paediatric thoracic surgery

Dr Kelvin Choo is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and had been a specialist Paediatric Surgeon since 2001.

Dr Choo grew up in northern New South Wales and graduated from the University of Sydney. He has worked and trained in three states throughout Australia as well as the United Kingdom. After qualifying as a Paediatric Surgeon, Dr Choo obtained further experience in Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool in the UK, and was then appointed as a consultant Paediatric Surgeon in Bristol Children's Hospital before returning to Brisbane in 2004.

Dr Choo has a wide experience in all aspects of paediatric surgery, including neonatal conditions, paediatric oncology, burns, genit-urinary problems, abdominal and thoracic conditions. He has extensive experience in minimal access techniques (laparoscopic or keyhole surgery).

Dr Choo's particular interests include:

• Hepatobiliary conditions, including biliary atresia and choledochal cyst

• Upper gastro-intestinal conditions, including disorders of the oesophagus and gastro-oesophageal reflux

• Thoracic conditions, including chest wall deformities and congenital and acquired lung lesions

Dr Choo is a visiting specialist at the Queensland Children's Hospital (QCH) in Brisbane, as well as the Mater Children's Private and Wesley Hospital. As well as his surgical practice, Dr Choo is heavily involved in teaching and training our future doctors and surgeons. He is the Queensland representative of the Board of Paediatric Surgery for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. He is a member of the Australia and New Zealand Association of Paediatric Surgeons, the international Paediatric Endosurgery Group and the Australia and New Zealand Burns Association.

Dr Choo is happily married to a Paediatrician. His pastimes outside of work include the location of obscure sporting fields all over Brisbane as he drives his four children around.
