Dr Kurinji Kannan

Dr Kurinji Kannan is an Obstetrician, Gynaecologist, and RANZCOG-certified Urogynaecologist.

Dr Kannan completed her Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at Madurai University in India. She completed her fellowship training by working in large tertiary and teaching hospitals, including King Edward Memorial Hospital in Perth, Middlemore Hospital and National Women's Hospital in New Zealand.

Dr Kannan is an experienced surgeon specialising in minimally invasive surgical methods and routinely performs complex laparoscopic and robotic surgeries.

As a specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Dr Kannan became increasingly aware of the impact of urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse in women.

One in three Australian women are affected by urinary incontinence (AIHW, 2006), and less than half seek help from qualified professionals (Byles & Chiarelli, 2003).

To help these women, she completed a sub-specialty in Urogynaecology, working at the urogynaecology, urology and colorectal units at Townsville Hospital and with Dr Malcolm Frazer on the Gold Coast. Dr Kannan is a urodynamicist certified by the Bristol Urological Institute in the UK.

A passionate educator, Dr Kannan is the first Obstetrician and Gynaecologist in Australasia to be awarded a Master of Surgical Education degree from the University of Melbourne with First Class Honours.

Dr Kannan provides North Queensland women a complete range of women's health services, including pregnancy, gynaecology and urogynaecology-related care.
