Biography
Dr Kurinji Kannan is an Obstetrician, Gynaecologist and Urogynaecologist consulting and operating at Mater Private Hospital Townsville and Mater Private Hospital Mackay.
Dr Kannan completed her Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at Madurai University, India. She undertook specialist training in obstetrics and gynaecology through the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG) Fellowship program in New Zealand achieving Fellowship in 2006.
Dr Kannan’s extensive postgraduate training was carried out across several major tertiary and teaching hospitals, including King Edward Memorial Hospital in Perth, Western Australia, and Middlemore Hospital and National Women’s Hospital in Auckland, New Zealand.
She subsequently completed subspecialty training in urogynaecology in Australia in 2011, including within the Urogynaecology, Urology and Colorectal units at Townsville University Hospital. and on the Gold Coast, where she worked with Professor Malcolm Frazer.
Dr Kannan’s career has been distinguished by several notable milestones. She became the first Indian woman to complete specialist training in obstetrics and gynaecology in New Zealand through the RANZCOG Fellowship Program, and the first Indian woman to qualify as a urogynaecologist in Australia and New Zealand.
In 2019, she became the first obstetrician and gynaecologist in Australasia to be awarded a Master of Surgical Education from the University of Melbourne, graduating with First Class Honours.
Dr Kannan is dedicated to supporting women throughout North Queensland by delivering comprehensive, evidence-based care focussed on the complex urogynaecological issues affecting women in the region.
She works collaboratively with multidisciplinary professionals to ensure coordinated, high-quality care tailored to each woman’s needs.
