Dr Leisa Barrett

Commencing her gastroenterology training at Mater, Dr Barrett completed her studies at the Princess Alexandra Hospital including a year in hepatology and liver transplantation.

Dr Barrett chose to study gastroenterology due to her interest in internal medicine, surgery, physiology and anatomy. Her special interests are chronic liver diseases, particularly abdominal liver diseases.

She identifies that the most enjoyable parts of her role are forming long-term relationships with patients with chronic illness and the balance between procedural work and patient consultation.

Looking towards the future of her specialty, Dr Barrett would like to see combination therapy for viral hepatitis, pharmacotherapy for nonalcoholic liver disease and a better understanding of functional bowel disorders within the next five years.
