Biography

Dr Michael Phegan is a Queensland-trained orthopaedic surgeon with a subspecialty interest in conditions affecting the foot and ankle. His interest in this region encompasses all aspects including sports injury, corrective surgery as well as the management of arthritis through the employment of fusion techniques and joint replacement.

Dr Phegan completed his medical degree at The University of Queensland in 2011 and began his medical journey on the Gold Coast, where he cultivated an interest in all areas of orthopaedics. He completed his orthopaedic training travelling to centres across Queensland, attaining his FRACS in 2021.

Dr Phegan completed a year-long fellowship under the supervision of prominent Sydney-based surgeon Dr Andrew Wines. During this time, he was also exposed to the teachings of tenured foot and ankle specialists Dr Kim Slater, Dr Les Grujic and Dr Peter Lam. This fellowship exposed him to all aspects of foot and ankle including joint replacement and deformity correction – both open and minimally invasive, as well as the management of sports injuries.

Dr Phegan maintains his role within the public sector in his role as a staff specialist for the Gold Coast Hospital and Health District, offering expert care in foot and ankle, and the management of general and complex orthopaedic trauma in both paediatric and adult populations. He finds this role rewarding, not only in its complexity, but also because it affords him the ability to educate hospital based junior doctors, nurses and allied health professionals, and to offer mentorship to those who are hoping to head down the surgical pathway.

Dr Phegan is excited to live and work on the Gold Coast, with his wife and three young children.
