Biography
Dr Prasanth Nair is an accomplished Cardiothoracic Surgeon consulting and operating at Mater Private Hospital Townsville. He brings more than 15 years of experience in cardiac and thoracic surgery across leading centres in India, New Zealand and Australia.
Dr Nair completed his medical degree at Government Medical College Thiruvananthapuram in 2004, followed by a Master of Surgery in 2009 and a Magister Chirurgiae in Cardiothoracic Surgery in 2012 at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh.
He went on to obtain the Diplomate of National Board in Cardiothoracic Surgery in 2013 and became a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2009.
Dr Nair undertook advanced cardiothoracic training at Monash Medical Centre in Melbourne before completing further subspecialty training at The Alfred, including a dedicated fellowship in heart and lung transplantation and mechanical circulatory support. He was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2022.
He has worked in high-volume cardiothoracic centres internationally, including Auckland City Hospital, and has published research in peer-reviewed journals. In 2024, he received a Townsville Hospital and Health Service SERTA Research Capacity Grant to support research into surgical outcomes for Indigenous patients with rheumatic heart disease.
Dr Nair is a Staff Specialist at Townsville University Hospital, and a Senior Lecturer with the College of Medicine and Dentistry at James Cook University.
