Dr Sandun Abeyasundara

Dr Sandun Abeyasundara is a General and Laparoscopic Surgeon and Gastrointestinal Endoscopist consulting and operating at Mater Private Hospital Redland. He provides a comprehensive range of surgical services, including gastroscopy and colonoscopy, and is accredited with the Gastrointestinal Society of Australia (GESA).

Having grown up in a small town in New Zealand, Dr Abeyasundara is known for his down-to-earth and approachable nature.

He completed a Bachelor of Science in Brisbane before studying medicine in the Republic of Ireland. After completing his internship in County Cork, he returned to Australia.

Dr Abeyasundara gained extensive experience in Sydney at major hospitals, including Liverpool Hospital, a leading trauma centre, before completing surgical training across Queensland in hospitals such as Princess Alexandra, Prince Charles, Ipswich, Mackay, Hervey Bay and Nambour.

He undertook two fellowship years at Redcliffe and QEII Hospitals, focusing on acute emergency General surgery, and gained experience in colorectal, upper gastrointestinal, breast, and endocrine surgery.

Dr Abeyasundara has significant rural experience through the Flying Surgical Service in Roma and surrounding areas, as well as Mt Isa. He also works publicly at Redland and QEII Hospitals.

Passionate about improving surgical services in the Redland region, Dr Abeyasundara is excited to be part of the team that will provide after-hours Emergency Surgery at Redland Public Hospital commencing in 2026.

He strongly values patient-centred care and is committed to delivering high-quality outcomes for his patients.
