Biography
Dr Toby Hulf is a Endocrine and General Surgeon with appointments at Mater Private Hospital Townsville and Townsville University Hospital.
He holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Sydney in (2014), following an early research career at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research (2007–2010), where he served as a Senior Scientist investigating epigenetic markers of cancer.
Dr Hulf began his surgical training at Royal Darwin Hospital before joining the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons’ (RACS) General Surgery Training Program in 2019. During his training, he gained broad experience across major Queensland hospitals including Townsville University Hospital, Princess Alexandra Hospital, Cairns Hospital, and Mackay Base Hospital. He was awarded Fellowship of the RACS in General Surgery in 2023.
Dr Hulf further specialised through fellowships in General and Endocrine Surgery at Western Health, Melbourne, and in Endocrine and Cancer Surgery at the Churchill Cancer Centre and John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, UK.
He is board-certified in Endocrine Surgery through the European Board of Surgery and holds Gastroenterological Society of Australia (GESA) accreditation in colonoscopy and gastroscopy.
Dr Hulf’s clinical interests include thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal surgery, with a particular focus on minimally invasive techniques and neuromonitoring to preserve vocal function. He also manages a range of general surgical conditions, including gallbladder diseases and hernias.
A member of RACS and the European Society of Endocrine Surgeons, Dr Hulf holds a PhD from the University of Zurich and remains actively involved in research on endocrine cancers.
