Biography

Dr Yohan Abeysekera is an orthopaedic surgeon, sub-specialising in spinal disorders. He holds a concurrent practice in general orthopaedics, consulting at Mater Private Hospital Rockhampton.

Dr Abeysekera completed his MBBS in Sri Lanka in 2007 before completing orthopaedic training in both Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom.

He undertook his first spinal fellowship in the UK under the International Surgical Trainee Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, followed by a second spinal fellowship at the Royal Perth Hospital’s State Spinal and Scoliosis Unit in Western Australia.

Dr Abeysekera obtained fellowships with the European Board of Orthopaedics and Traumatology in 2018, the Royal College of Surgeons of England (trauma and orthopaedics) in 2022 and the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2025. In the same year, he became a member of the Australian Orthopaedic Association.

He combines conventional open surgery with advanced minimally invasive techniques to treat a wide range of spinal conditions. His expertise spans the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar regions, addressing disc herniations, nerve compression syndromes, radiculopathy, degenerative and arthritic spine disease, spinal deformities such as scoliosis, kyphosis, and spondylolisthesis, as well as traumatic spinal injuries.

With a concurrent practice in general orthopaedics, Dr Abeysekera also treats nerve entrapment syndromes and lower-limb osteoarthritis, offering a balanced, holistic approach to musculoskeletal care.
