Biography
Dr Jai Raman is an internationally recognised cardiothoracic surgeon with more than 30 years of experience in clinical care, research, and leadership across Australia and the United States.
Dr Raman operates privately at Mater Private Hospital Townsville and NQMIS, and leads cardiothoracic surgery at Townsville University Hospital, delivering advanced cardiac care to remote and Indigenous communities.
Dr Raman trained in Melbourne (1997) and earned a PhD from the University of Melbourne (2003).
He spent 17 years in the United States in senior roles at Rush University Medical Centre and the University of Chicago, returning to Australia in 2019, where he continues to hold appointments at major hospitals including Austin Health, St Vincent’s and Epworth.
Dr Raman’s research focuses on heart failure, minimally invasive cardiac surgery, and transplantation. He has led and participated in five global clinical trials, holds more than 30 patents in cardiac devices and technologies, and has published more than 340 peer-reviewed papers, with over 10,600 citations and an H-index of 53.
Recent innovations include advanced tissue assessment techniques, improved ECMO delivery, valve-preserving procedures, and climate-related studies in critical care.
He is actively involved in translational research collaborations with Monash University, CSIRO, and the Florey Institute.
Dr Raman is a sought-after speaker and surgical mentor, with ongoing global engagements in India, East Timor, and Kenya. He also contributes to education through platforms like MEDD and Hope for Hearts, and leads Spectromix Pty Ltd, driving innovation in surgical technology and global cardiac care.
