Biography

Dr Anthony Kwan is Director of Vitreoretinal Surgery at the Queensland Eye Institute,  Director of Ophthalmology at the Mater Hospital Brisbane and Director of the Queensland Electro-Diagnostic and Imaging Centre. Dr Kwan is also Research Committee Chair at the Macular Disease Foundation of Australia. He has been the Chair of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Retinal Specialists since 2013.

Dr Kwan was educated in the United Kingdom, and undertook his ophthalmology training at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, UK. He obtained his postgraduate research doctorate (MD) at the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, London, in experimental retinal transplantation, under the supervision of Professor Alan Bird and Professor Raymond Lund. He was fellowship trained in at the Lions Eye Institute in Perth, Australia, and at Moorfields Eye Hospital.

Dr Kwan holds the academic title of associate professor of ophthalmology from the University of Queensland and has published widely in both clinical and scientific journals. He received grants from the Wellcome Trust and MRC in the UK, and from the Ophthalmic Research Institute of Australia, Macular Disease Foundation Australia, and NHMRC in Australia. He specialises in both medical and surgical retinal diseases.
