Biography

Dr Shane Higgins is one of Brisbane's most experienced obstetricians and infertility specialists. Having delivered over 6000 babies since his first baby in 1985, he remains very committed to his patients having autonomy in all decisions of their pregnancy and is dedicated to empowering women to achieve a positive birth experience.

Shane graduated from the University of QLD in 1985. He did his specialty obstetric and gynaecology training in major teaching, regional and rural QLD hospitals including the Royal Flying Obstetric Service and reproductive medicine at Queensland Fertility Group.

Shane is very experienced in all aspects of general obstetrics especially multiple births, high risk obstetrics, vaginal births after Caesarean section (VBAC) and maintaining a low Caesarean section rate. 

Shane has over 18 years experience in fertility treatment. He also provides pre-conception services and gynaecological services including expert minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery. 

Shane also has a special interest in providing healthcare to women from the deaf community as his eldest daughter is severely hearing impaired. Shane continues be committed to women's health by participating in various community based charities including Zonta birthing kit project for 3rd world countries. Shane is on the Doctors National Advisory Committee of Virtus Health, one of the worlds leading infertility service providers.

Shane has worked at Mater for over 30 years. He met his wife at Mater, a trained nurse. Both his daughters were born at Mater.  His eldest daughter spent some time at Mater doing her audiology training. He believes strongly embodying the Mission of the Mater in all aspects of his job.
