Biography

Dr Laurence Marshman is a Neurosurgeon, specialising in Neurosurgery and spine surgery, with special interests in the diagnosis and treatment of Spinal disorders: including non-operative management with spinal injections, as well as operative management of both simple and complex spines (including disc replacements and spinal fusions).

Laurence graduated in Medicine (MB ChB) at Glasgow University, and then qualified as a General Surgeon (FRCS) in Manchester Royal Infirmary. After specialising in Neurosurgery, and completing an MD thesis on Subarachnoid Haemorrhage, Laurence then qualified as a Neurosurgeon (FRCSN) in King’s College Hospital, London. After completing a Fellowship in Orthopaedic Spine Surgery, approved by the Royal College of Surgeons of England, Laurence followed his uncle’s footsteps (Arthur Marshman OAM) and emigrated to Australia in 2007 where he was subsequently awarded the FRACS. Laurence has been active in medical research for over 20 years, and currently has over 90 Medical and Scientific publications: distributed between neurosurgery and spine surgery. Laurence assesses research for numerous International Journals, and is currently an Editorial Board Member for Spine, Clinical Neurology and Neurosurgery and the Journal of Neurology Research. Laurence has been Associate Professor of Surgery at the James Cook University for 5 years, where he is active in teaching and examining Medical Under-Graduate Students, and in mentoring Post-Graduate research. Laurence’s clinical interests are, like his research, divided between Neurosurgery and Spine surgery.

Dr Marshman adopts a person-centred care approach. Listening to the patient is the most important aspect of this approach, before tying this together with the physical findings and relevant scans. With spinal conditions, spinal injections are important to both the diagnosis and management: findings are correlated with the history, physical findings and scans (CT or MRI).
