A field of more than 3600 cyclists is on track to raise $700,000 to fight cancer after completing the Brisbane to Gold Coast Cycle for Cancer today.
The mammoth field of riders completed a 100km course stretching from South Brisbane to the Gold Coast’s Broadwater, with cancer survivors and researchers among those taking part.
The funds will be used to support Mater cancer research, services and equipment across Mater’s 13 Queensland hospitals – including the new Mater Private Hospital Gold Coast at Southport.
Mater Foundation Chief Executive Andrew Thomas thanked the cyclists, volunteers, supporters and emergency services personnel for making the event possible.
“The support of Queensland’s cycling community has been incredible,” Mr Thomas said, as he welcomed riders at the finish line at the Gold Coast’s Fisherman’s Lawn.
“Champion cyclists, amateur riders and cancer survivors all came together from across Queensland for this inspirational event.
“Funds raised by our cyclists will support world-class cancer research at Mater – creating a national and international impact and powering us towards a cure.
“Everyone at Mater – and especially our patients – is grateful to the 3600 riders who got on their bikes to fight cancer.
“This ride is about one great team of people – our riders – supporting teams in the frontline of the fight against cancer.”
Thousands of riders began leaving the South Brisbane starting line at 5.45am today and completed a 100km course ending at Fisherman’s Lawn on the Gold Coast’s Broadwater.
Australian women’s cycling legend Kate Bates, a former Commonwealth Games champion, and Brisbane Broncos legend Corey Oates were among those at the front of the field as it headed across Brisbane, Logan and the northern Gold Coast.
