Mater Hospital Springfield has celebrated a significant construction milestone, with the project’s “topping out” ceremony.
Originating in Scandinavia, these ceremonies involve a tree being hoisted to the highest point of a construction site once the highest beams or slabs are in place.

Mater Hospital Springfield General Manager Suzanne Hawksley recognised the significance of the feat, as the public hospital edges closer to completion.
“We’re on track to offer expanded health services to Brisbane’s western corridor from early next year,” Ms Hawksley said.
“Mater Hospital Springfield will triple our healthcare capacity locally, bringing more essential services closer to home.”
The nine-story facility is now waterproofed up to the eighth floor, and the fit-out of the lower floors is nearly complete.

Springfield City Group Chief Executive Officer Raynuha Sinnathamby said the project would support growth in the region.
“We are a community driven by health, education and innovation, and are proud to partner with Mater in prioritising this for our region,” Ms Sinnathamby said.
“It’s exciting to know our residents will soon have access to emergency, maternity and paediatric care closer to home, without the need to travel to Ipswich or Brisbane for care.”
The project’s topping out was attended by Springfield City Group, as well as Mater’s project team and principal contractor, John Holland Group.
“It’s been fantastic to inspect the progress being made,” Ms Hawksley said.
“The quality of the construction is a testament to everyone involved in Mater Hospital Springfield to date.
“I want to commend the team from John Holland for their collaboration with Mater’s own project team, and Springfield City Group for their continued advocacy and commitment to delivering the best health services for every Springfield resident.”
