Sea of pink returns to Springfield on International Women’s Day

News

Up to 2,000 pink-shirted participants are expected to take part in the 2026 Mater Chicks in Pink International Women’s Day Fun Run presented by Queensland X-Ray, being held at Robelle Domain Parklands on Sunday 8 March.

This year, Springfield’s five‑kilometre event will coincide with International Women’s Day.

The Mater Chicks in Pink Fun Run is dedicated to raising awareness and funds for breast cancer care and research, with one in every four Queenslanders diagnosed with the disease treated at a Mater hospital.

Mater Hospital Springfield General Manager Suzanne Hawksley said funds raised from previous Fun Runs have been invested directly into improved facilities and services in the western corridor.

“Taking part in the Fun Run helps Mater provide vital care, support and research for those impacted by breast cancer at Mater Cancer Care Centre, Springfield,” Ms Hawksley said.

“We know one in seven women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, and community support is vital in ensuring they have access to state-of-the-art diagnostic and medical care, as well as cutting-edge research into improved treatments.”

Ipswich City Council Mayor Teresa Harding said most people knew someone impacted by breast cancer, and Mater’s Fun Run provided an opportunity to rally around their friends and loved ones.

“Mater does incredible work supporting the Ipswich and Springfield communities, and the more funds we can help raise for Mater Chicks in Pink, the more people they’ll be able to help in their fight against this disease,” she said.

“This is an exciting time for our region, with Mater Hospital Springfield opening from April bringing maternity, paediatric and emergency care close to home for our residents.”

Mater Foundation Chief Executive Andrew Thomas said people unable to attend Robelle Domain on International Women’s Day could still participate by signing up for ‘5K Your Way’.

“You can contribute to improving breast cancer care and research by completing a 5km walk, jog or run at a location of your choice,” Mr Thomas said.

“Last year, the Queensland community raised $1.8 million for breast cancer care and research and we’re aiming to reach $2 million in 2026.”

Mater’s International Women’s Day Fun Run events in Springfield, Brisbane, Townsville and across regional areas will see almost 30,000 Queenslanders pound the pavement for people with breast cancer.
