Caring for family with Mater Aged Placement Services this Easter

16/Apr/2019     Health

Easter is a time for families to come together, but it can often be an overwhelming time too. It’s the time of year when families come together, friends stop by to visit, and the vast majority of us experience increased stress trying to coordinate holiday activities in preparation for Easter. This stress is often multiplied for those caring for an elderly parent or loved one.

Carer stress is becoming more common, with concerns increasing as many people begin to spend more time caring for an elderly parent than their own children.

Easter allows time to reflect on our family needs, and is an opportunity to consider the support options for the family into the future. Carers often turn to aged care facilities to assist in providing high quality care for their loved family members.

But aged care may not be the only option available to you, with home care becoming more readily available throughout greater South East Queensland.

These services can relieve carers of stress and concern, knowing that their loved one is receiving high quality care that aims to optimise their quality of life and capacity to live independently. .

Mater Aged Placement Services

When it comes time to consider aged care placement for a loved one, there are some things you can do to help make this process a smooth transition for all involved:

  • Plan ahead and complete an Enduring Power of Attorney for your loved one, provided they have a My Aged Care Support Plan with approval for Permanent Residential placement
  • Talk openly about care options with your loved one, as well as all other family and friends involved; discuss current care needs and time frames
  • Emphasise your loved one’s safety and wellbeing throughout the process
  • Think about what types of activities your loved one enjoys, what they value, and a suitable location that is close to friends and family. This will assist in finding a placement that will be the right fit for the entire family.

If you need assistance with finding an aged care facility the Mater Aged Placement Service is an independent care placement and advisory service provided by Mater Health. Mater Aged Placed Services works alongside clients and their families to simplify the transition into an appropriate facility and provide professional advice and understanding when settling in. Services include:

  • An assessment of your loved one’s aged care requirements
  • Identification of which aged care facilities may be suitable, and suitable to the needs of the extended family
  • Tailored services to suit the individual
  • Liaison with and referral to aged care assessment teams, who are responsible for assessing eligibility for aged care placements
  • Assistance with the completion of paperwork, including application and asset forms
  • Work quickly and efficiently to provide timely solutions
  • Ongoing liaison until a suitable aged care placement is secured
  • Family counselling and assistance for more complex issues.
