In the recent National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Ideas and Investigator Grant rounds, Mater Research was successful in obtaining funding for five research grants totaling $6.6 million.
Mater Research Chief Executive Officer, Professor Maher Gandhi said the funding is an acknowledgement of the high quality research being undertaken by the teams.
“Commonwealth Government funding supports Mater Researchers to discover develop and translate our medical research into tangible and significant patient outcomes,” he said.
Dr Adam Ewing’s work was singled out by Minister for Health The Hon Greg Hunt as the recipient of an Investigator Grant funded from the Medical Research Future Fund as part of the federal announcement. He is researching the history of the human genome and the mechanisms of genomic disease.
Professor Geoff Faulkner is researching somatic genome mosaicism in human development and neurodegeneration which will further our understanding of brain disease.
Dr Sandra Richardson is investigating the invisible impact of mobile DNA activity during human development when it comes to pregnancy loss.
Dr Sumaira Hasnain is studying liver targeted Interleukin-22 for the treatment of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis and is doing exceptionally well with her work in liver disease.
Professor Jean-Pierre Levesque is seeking to discover the mechanisms of neurogenic heterotopic ossifications following spinal cord injuries he seeks to understand why heterotopic ossifications form in patients with spinal cord injuries and aims to develop effective treatments.
