Coming to Mater Mothers' Private Brisbane

During your stay with us, our midwives and nurses will provide education and information to enable you to confidently care for yourself and your baby in preparation for going home. While at Mater Mothers’ Private Brisbane, you will have 24 hour access to our expert, caring midwives, nurses and clinical support team at the press of a button. Baby care assistants are also on hand to assist you and your partner with settling your baby during the night.

There are a range of informative talks and classes available daily for you to attend during your stay with us. Your midwife or nurse will let you know where and when these classes are happening. We recommend that you attend as many as you can.

During the final stages of your pregnancy, we highly recommend that you and your support person take time to familiarise yourselves with our hospital and where to go.

Where to go for admission

Admission during the day

For admission to Mater Mothers’ Private Brisbane during the day, please present to the main entrance of the hospital off Raymond Terrace. You will need to go through the security boom gate before you get to the hospital. For your convenience there is a set-down/pick-up area at the front of the building. Your support person can park the car here for a period of five minutes.

If you can walk, please go to the main reception on level 5 where you will be directed to the Pregnancy Assessment Centre. If you are in strong labour and too uncomfortable to move from the car or you need immediate assistance, please remain in the car and ask your support person to request urgent assistance at the hospital's main reception, located on Level 5.

After hours admissions

After hours (between 8.30 pm and 6 am) the security boom gates are unattended but there is a video intercom to enable you to contact security, who will remotely operate the boom gate.

The front doors to the hospital will be electronically locked between 8.30pm and 6am. Please contact reception using the video intercom at the front door to gain entry into the hospital.

Emergency admissions

If you are experiencing pregnancy-related problems, or it has been less than six weeks since your baby’s birth, please go directly to Mater Mothers’ Pregnancy Assessment Centre on level 5. Please phone Mater Mothers’ Private Brisbane on 07 3163 7000 to let us know you’re on your way and a midwife will contact your obstetrician.

Accommodation

At Mater Mothers’ Private Brisbane, our rooms are designed to ensure your stay is comfortable. Each single room includes an ensuite bathroom, baby bathing facilities, phone, patient entertainment system, refrigerator and inner-city views with natural light.

Your partner or support person is able to stay overnight on the day bed provided. Children are welcome to the hospital as visitors but are not permitted to stay overnight. For your convenience, tea and coffee making items are provided in your room. Hot water can be obtained from the patient's lounge on your floor.

Rooming-in

Mater Mothers’ Private Brisbane practices rooming-in. This allows mothers and babies to remain together 24 hours a day. Rooming-in helps mothers bond with their babies and gain confidence in their care. Research shows that mothers actually get more sleep when rooming-in with their baby.

A mother who is rooming-in is able to attend to her baby when feeding cues are displayed, helping her establish a good milk flow by promoting milk let-down. This means you are less likely to have hard sore breasts, your milk supply will become established, and breastfeeding will get off to a good start. You also make antibodies from your own body and environment that you pass on to your baby through your breast milk. This means your baby is less at risk of infection in the first few days when they are in close contact with you.

Birth suite

The birthing rooms at Mater Mothers’ Private Brisbane provide a warm and home-like atmosphere for the birth of your baby. Each birthing room is self-contained, with a television, telephone, CD player with iPod adapter and aromatherapy burner.

Your midwife will help you achieve your individual birth plan, and make the most of pain relief options. Refreshments are provided for you and your support person. Meals and snacks for your support person can also be obtained from the café or vending machines on Level 5 of the hospital.

Operating suite

If you have a caesarean birth with a spinal anaesthetic, we welcome one support person into the operating suite and will provide your support person with appropriate theatre clothing. If you need to have a caesarean with a general anaesthetic your support person will not be permitted in the operating suite. No additional visitors are allowed in the recovery room.

Room Service

We are proud to offer an award-winning room service menu that is specifically designed by Mater chefs and dietitians to meet your health and wellbeing needs. All meals are cooked fresh in-house daily and delivered to your bedside.

Caring for you pelvic floor

We encourage you to care for your pelvic floor before and after the birth of your baby. If you would like to see one of our Women’s Health Physiotherapists, you will be asked to make a booking prior to your admission to hospital through Mater's Health and Wellness Centre. If you have not made a booking but decide you would like to see a physiotherapist once you are at hospital, please call 07 3163 6000.

Baby Care Assistants

Mater Mothers’ Private Brisbane is committed to providing mothers and babies with the best possible support and environment in your early days of motherhood.

Baby care assistants are available between 11 pm and 5 am every night to assist you with settling your baby, allowing you to get much needed rest.

The baby care assistant will try to settle your baby in your room as a first preference, to allow you and your baby to establish optimal breastfeeding results and to reduce the risk of infection. However, baby care assistants can also care for your baby outside the inpatient room for periods of up to one hour.
