The Redlands will become the Pinklands next month when hundreds of runners and walkers hit the streets for the Mater Chicks in Pink International Women’s Day Fun Run, presented by Queensland X-Ray.
While 23,000 people take part in the main Brisbane CBD event on Sunday March 9, the bayside will host its own fund-raising fun run a week earlier on Sunday March 2, starting and finishing at the Old Cleveland Lighthouse.
A 50-strong team of staff and patients from Mater Private Hospital Redland – the Mater Redlands Pink Unicorns – will join the event, which will include both 3km and 5km courses.
They will be joined by other teams from across the Redlands, many of whom have been directly impacted by breast cancer.
Mater’s team is being led by Breast Care Nurse Janice Butler and Keila Slater, the Nurse Unit Manager of the hospital’s Mater Cancer Care Centre.
Ms Butler is urging residents to sign up to Redlands’ 5K Your Way event to support world-leading breast cancer research and services at Mater – but places are filling up fast.
“The Redlands fun run is getting bigger every year and we want as many local residents to get on board as we can,” Ms Butler said.
“The funds we raise will go directly towards supporting women fighting breast cancer and to vital breast cancer research.
“This year Mater Foundation has funded new equipment at our hospital to detect and monitor lymphedema in breast cancer patients and it also funds special bras for patients, wigs for women who lose their hair and even home cleaning services.
“Every dollar makes a difference to our amazing patients.”
Ms Slater added that the event was a great way to bring people whose lives have been touched by breast cancer together.
“We’ll be catching up with lots of our current and former patients at the fun run,” she said.
“They are the most important people taking part – it’s their day more than anything.”
The Redlands International Women’s Day Fun Run will start at 6.45am on Sunday March 2.
