The Mackay community is encouraged to lace up their walking shoes and join in the 2026 Mater Chicks in Pink International Women’s Day Fun Run to help raise awareness and care for people with breast cancer.

Funds raised by the Mackay community will go towards improving the diagnosis, treatment and care of local patients and their families.

Mater Private Hospital Mackay breast surgeon Dr Wendela Schimmer said community fundraising efforts in previous years had enabled the purchase of advanced technology that improves lumpectomy surgeries.

The Savi Scout is a radar localisation system that pinpoints tumours, improving precision and accuracy for surgeons by limiting the amount of tissue that needs to be removed.

“We’re very lucky to have it in Mackay, because it’s very advanced technology,” Dr Schimmer said.

“It’s the same technology being used in Brisbane at tertiary centres and enables us to provide comprehensive breast cancer care here, close to people’s homes.

“It’s a major step forward for local patients.”

One in seven Australian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetimes.

One in four Queensland women diagnosed with breast cancer is treated at a Mater hospital across the state.

Mater Private Hospital Mackay General Manager Karen Wade said almost 30,000 people across Queensland will take part in the Fun Run on Sunday 8 March, and she encouraged the Mackay community to join the statewide ‘Sea of Pink’.

“You can map your own 5K walk, run or jog around your local area and complete the Fun Run anytime between 1 – 8 March,” Ms Wade said.

“Most of us know a friend or family member who has had breast cancer, and this is a great way to demonstrate our support as a community.

“We’re hoping to raise $2 million across the state for Mater Chicks in Pink and support their incredible work.

“You can do 5K Your Way anywhere you choose between 1 – 8 March and join the Sea of Pink to help improve care and outcomes for people with breast cancer.”
