More than 600 Mater midwives are celebrating International Day of the Midwife today (Tues 5 May) – and a bumper month for Brisbane babies.
Last month was the busiest April at Mater Mothers’ for five years, with 870 newborns being delivered at the South Brisbane hospital.
March was also a big month for the midwifery team, with 900 babies born at Mater – making it the busiest March for four years.
Flowers and brownies are being delivered across the Mater hospital campus today to thank midwives for their work throughout the year.
“We’ve been very busy over the last two months,” said Director of Clinical Services Lee Poole.
“Our busiest months do fluctuate and it’s not always predictable, but it’s always a privilege to welcome little Queenslanders into the world whenever they come,
“Our midwives have been exceptional, as they always are. Their commitment is unwavering and they are hugely appreciated by our mums and families.”
Around 10,000 babies a year are born at Mater Mothers’ Hospital and Mater Mothers’ Private Brisbane each year.
The total of 900 babies born in March was 59 more than the same month last year, while April’s total of 870 was 27 higher than last year.
Kiara Wilson has worked as a midwife at Mater Mothers’ Hospital for five years.
“Looking after people and their babies is a wonderful job,” she said.
“And my colleagues are the best people ever to work with – they’re amazing.
“Everyone is always helpful and happy and no matter how busy we are we band together for our patients.”
Mum Elise Andersen was full of praise for the midwifery team after delivering her second baby, William, on Thursday 30 April.
“I chose Mater Mothers’ for my second baby because I have epilepsy and wanted the team here to manage my care,” Ms Andersen said.
“All of the midwives have been incredible throughout my pregnancy. They have advocated for me and been so caring. They do a wonderful job.”
