A North Queensland family has welcomed their first baby into the world at Mater Private Hospital Townsville just in time for Mother’s Day.

Danae Katsaros, 26, and her husband Ben, 29, welcomed baby Billy into the world at 4:17pm on 4 May, weighing 3.45kg.

“There aren’t words to describe that feeling of holding them in your arms for the first time… it was just surreal,” Mrs Katsaros said.

“It’s been a long time coming so it’s very special to have Billy here as a little gift for Mother’s Day and the rest of our lives!”

Mrs Katsaros said baby Billy – born 3.45kg – is doing well, and the family will be able to celebrate their first Mother’s Day together as a trio at home in Alice River.

“Billy’s doing really well… he’s a milk monster – he just wants to keep eating!

“He’s the first grandchild for both sides of the family so he is going to be spoiled.”

Mrs Katsaros praised the work of Mater Private Hospital Townsville staff who made the birth of her son “seamless”.

“As first-time parents we have so much learning to do, so it’s been great to receive so much advice from the doctors and midwives here at Mater.

“Our obstetrician was amazing and it was really good to have so much support.”

Mater Private Hospital Townsville Acting General Manager Anna Olson wished all Mater mothers a happy Mother’s Day.

“At Mater we’re privileged to be able to share with mums, dads and bubs their very first moments together,” Ms Olson said.

“Welcoming new babies into the world at Mater is special, and we’re grateful to have our new Pimlico maternity unit to help ensure North Queensland families can access high-quality care close to home.”

The new maternity unit has three state-of-the-art birth suites, a six-cot special care nursery, and 12 private rooms, all with ensuites, offering a family-friendly and comfortable environment.

Around 600 babies a year are born at Mater Mothers’ Private Townsville.
