Easter reflection

09/Apr/2023     Mission

Sister Angela Mary Doyle famously presented a TED talk some time ago titled ‘Impact through empathy’. It is a core element of all Mater Welcome Days. The ‘new starters’ are then invited to share any reflections on this talk. Last week some new Mater People shared that they were a bit anxious to be coming to Mater, a Catholic organisation, as they were unsure of what would be ahead. They then shared after the talk that they were relieved to know that at Mater, ‘love is love’ and ‘impact through empathy’ is part of our DNA.

‘Love is love’—at Easter, we are challenged to refocus our attention on love for the other. When we take the time to imagine what it is like to be another, we have an opportunity to grow our reservoirs of care and kindness. Jesus invites us every Easter to fully embrace our understanding of love: a deep force within us that continually calls us to care, show forgiveness and be kind to ourselves and each other. When we strive to deliver ‘impact through empathy’, we answer that call.

Jesus lived a life of ‘impact’—his teachings and actions resonated with people who were crushed by societal norms that excluded and punished. By displaying love and empathy with the poor, ill, diseased and disabled, and restoring them to their families, Jesus impacted not only their individual lives, but the lives of their community. In time, this impact spread throughout the world.

The recently opened Catherine’s House is an example of the loving impact living on through Mater and in our community. The excitement and pride so many feel about this achievement is due to the knowledge it will change people’s lives for the better and restore them to their families and friends—just as Jesus taught us.

This Easter we are invited to love with generosity, making an impact on the lives of our patients, colleagues, families and friends. We honour our heritage and the legacy of the healing ministry we have received and look forward to continuing to bring God’s mercy to our community.

May God bless you, your family and friends.
