Antenatal Clinic

Mater Mothers' Hospital referral guidelines

Mater Mothers’ Hospital at South Brisbane has a long history of providing maternity and neonatal services for women who live within the catchment, in addition to tertiary referrals from across Queensland and Northern New South Wales.

Mater Mothers’ is now taking referrals for Mater Hospital Springfield for women with an estimated due date of 25 May 2026 or later.  To support this change, the Mater Mothers’ Hospital catchment has expanded to include people living in Greater Springfield.

The new suburbs include:

  • Springfield Central (4300)
  • Redbank Plains (4301)
  • Redbank (4301)
  • Collingwood Park (4301)
  • New Chum (4303)
  • Spring Mountain (4300)

Antenatal clinics for women living in Greater Springfield will initially be held at Mater Mothers’ Hospital at South Brisbane and will be offered in Springfield from December 2025.

GPs should submit a Mater Antenatal Clinic referral form as soon as possible after the patient’s first appointment or after confirmation of the due date by ultrasound scan if the last know menstrual period is unknown.

Referrals for Mater Mothers’ Hospital at South Brisbane and Mater Mothers’ Springfield are all triaged at South Brisbane and appointments are allocated according to urgency and due date. Women who live within Greater Springfield will birth at Mater Hospital Springfield unless a higher level of care is required.

A booking appointment will be arranged at an appropriate time depending on the allocated model of care.

Ultrasound reports and a copy of blood test results should be included with the referral or faxed to the antenatal clinic when available.

Women should be referred locally for nuchal translucency scans and routine morphology scans. Women who want diagnostic testing (CVS or amniocentesis) can be referred to the Mater Maternal Fetal Medicine Centre for both counselling and testing.

Please note, there is no catchment restrictions for women under the care of a private obstetrician at Mater Mothers' Private Brisbane.
