Biography
Dr Robert Norton is a clinical microbiologist and Professor at James Cook University, consulting from Mater Private Hospital Townsville. He is a past Director of Microbiology and Pathology at Townsville University Hospital and has over 30 years’ experience in clinical microbiology, infectious diseases and public health medicine.
Dr Norton has worked extensively in remote Australian Indigenous communities in northern Australia and has a particular interest in the diagnosis and management of tropical infectious diseases, including melioidosis and Q fever. He is actively involved in medical education and specialist training and research, with more than 180 peer-reviewed publications and contributions to national and international infectious disease guidelines.
In recognition of his contribution to pathology, research and education, Dr Norton was awarded the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia Meritorious Service Award in 2023 and the RCPA Teaching Award in 2024.
Dr Norton is committed to delivering high-quality care to all patients, engaging regularly with Mater Private Hospital Townsville’s leadership and Medical Advisory Committee to identify and implement clinical improvements across the facility.
