Mater’s emergency expansion meets demand

News

Mater Private Hospital Townsville is expanding its Emergency Department capacity to support the growing numbers of North Queenslanders who are accessing the service.

More than 15,000 patients were treated in the ED last year – a 10 per cent increase on the previous year.

The expansion project, which is due for completion in November, will expand from the current nine treatment bays to add a further four fast-track bays to the department.

Mater Private Hospital Townsville’s Director of Emergency Dr Philip Gaudin said the expansion demonstrated the growth in demand for ED care.

“Both public and private patients are able to present to the Emergency Department and have access to Mater’s full suite of clinicians and services with minimal wait time,” Dr Gaudin said.

“Since the opening of the Townsville Emergency Department in 2017, we’ve seen a huge increase in demand from the community.

“Development of a larger department means we can continue to keep waiting times to a minimum.

“It’s also a demonstration of Private Emergency Health Australia's commitment to improving services for North Queenslanders and continuing to invest in healthcare services here.”

Mater Private Hospital Townsville General Manager Stephanie Barwick said the project reflected expanding healthcare services available for North Queenslanders.

“Mater's ED triages and treats everything from major to minor illnesses and injuries, and all ages from paediatric to adult. The department’s common presentations include cardiac arrests, broken bones, obstructed airways and severe reactions – providing our community with direct access to full-circle care from diagnosis to rehabilitation,” Ms Barwick said.

“The additional treatment bays will support our critical care capabilities and complement further services moving to our Pimlico campus by early next year.

“This expansion forms part of Mater’s maternity and renal unit relocation from our Hyde Park to Pimlico campus, with the new renal unit also expected to be operational by late 2025 and Mater Mothers’ Private Townsville opening in Pimlico from early 2026.”
