There aren’t many newsreaders in Australia who have presented the news while 38 weeks pregnant and then given birth the following week.
But two weeks ago on Ten News, Georgina Hill made Queensland history while filling in for Sharyn Ghidella, one week before the birth of her second daughter at Mater Mothers’ Hospital in Brisbane.
“Everyone was really worried that I might go into labour during the bulletin,” Mrs Hill said.
“My tummy kept bumping the desk and the baby was very active, moving all the way through the bulletin.
“I had to take lots of deep breaths to get through the hour and try to remain composed.”
On Wednesday the much-loved reporter and presenter gave birth to a healthy baby girl, named Florence weighing 3.97 kilograms.
“It was smooth sailing; everything went well thanks to the great care of the doctors and midwives at Mater,” Mrs Hill said.
“She is such a healthy and beautiful baby.
“We didn’t know what we were having - everyone had convinced me it was a boy - so it was such an unbelievable surprise.”
Florence is a big sister to four-year-old Addison also born at Mater in 2021, when COVID restrictions were still in force.
“That was tough because visitors were limited, and now I’m just looking forward to having a whole new experience.
“I’m keen to have my mum, family and friends all come and visit and see our beautiful new baby.
“My eldest daughter Addison suggested the name Florence a few weeks ago after reading a children’s book, and my husband Joe and I loved the name straight away.”
Mrs Hill and Florence are expected to be home in time for Father’s Day and dad Joe Hill, a former Ten News reporter said it’s going to be a very special day for the family of four.
“Florence is the most perfect Father’s Day gift and I’m looking forward to enjoying all of my girls,” Mr Hill said.
“But instead of me having breakfast in bed, it will probably be Georgina’s turn this year,”
Mrs Hill will be taking a year of maternity leave, so viewers will need to wait until 2026 before she’s back on television.
“After ten years of doing the news, I’m looking forward to taking a break and enjoying my new day job as a mother of two.”
