Baby twins share everything, except their birthday

Beautiful newborn twins Miles and Chester Hughes already share an unbreakable bond – but they’ll never share the same birthday.

Although the brothers were born at Mater Mother’s Hospital just 18 minutes apart, they were delivered either side of midnight and on different days.

Proud mum Jaime gave birth to Chester at 11.55pm on 23 March, with Miles following at 12.13am on 24 March.

Remarkably, the fraternal twins weighed exactly the same at birth – 2.96kg.

“Having twins weighing the same, but on separate days, was a big surprise – but very special too,” said Jaime.

“I had spent all day in labour, so I had no idea what time the boys were born, but afterwards the midwives said they’d never seen twins delivered on separate days before.”

More than 70 per cent of twin births in Australia are via caesarean section, with babies usually delivered in quick succession.

Miles and Chester were delivered at 37 weeks’ gestation, with neither requiring time in Mater’s Neonatal Critical Care Unit.

They are now at home with parents Jaime and Lachlan and have been getting to know their big brother, Oliver (3).

“I’ve thought a little about how we are going to mark the twins’ birthdays,” Jaime said.

“I’m an event manager, so I love the idea of organising a celebration on each of their birthdays, but we’ll follow the boys’ lead as they grow up.

“Right now I’m just loving being a mum to three boys. Miles and Chester are both so chill, and Oliver is obsessed with them. We are very, very lucky parents.”

Mater Mothers’ Hospital General Manager Kerri Gane said it was very unusual for twins to be born on separate days, but not unknown. More than 1100 sets of twins have been delivered at Mater Mothers’ Hospital over the last five years.

“All Mater babies are special, but Miles and Chester are exceptional – and very cute!” Ms Gane said.

“Mater wishes the whole family the best as they start a new and very exciting chapter together.”
