As some of Australia’s largest Neonatal Critical Care Units, our expert team of neonatal specialists provides compassionate and holistic care to seriously ill and premature babies, including babies who are born extremely prematurely or require complex medical, cardiac and surgical care.
Our team aims to provide the best environment for your baby to continue to grow and develop; supporting your baby to mature and thrive. It is our priority to build a relationship with you too, so you are comfortable to take the lead with caring for your baby, asking questions, receiving information, are comfortable in the environment and ultimately allowing us to provide the best care possible to your baby.
Preterm Medical Intensive Care Nursery
The Preterm Medical Intensive Care Nursery is an area of the NCCU that has 30 cots dedicated to the care of premature and/or small babies (particularly those who are less than 32 weeks gestation or less than 1500g), babies who require assistance to breathe, or babies with medical problems that require high intensity nursing and medical care. The Preterm Medical Intensive Care Nursery environment can seem very overwhelming at first, as it contains a lot of medical equipment for monitoring and treating small and/or unwell babies. We also understand that having a premature baby or finding out that your baby is unwell is also extremely worrying and upsetting.
Cardiac Surgical Intensive Care Nursery
The Cardiac Surgical Care Nursery is an area of the NCCU that has 17 cots dedicated to the care of babies with heart problems or surgical problems that may require an operation or procedure, particularly when specialists from the Queensland Children’s Hospital are also involved in the care of the baby. The Cardiac Surgical Care Nursery environment can also be overwhelming, as it contains a lot of medical equipment for monitoring and treating babies. Many families will have found out about their baby’s problems before the baby is born, but for others, it comes as a shock after the baby is born.
Special Care Nursery—Transition To Home
The Special Care Nursery is an area of the NCCU that has 32 cots dedicated to the care of premature and/or small babies who do not require intensive care, or babies with medical problems that require more care than can be provided on the post-natal floors. The Special Care Nursery environment has a lot less medical and monitoring equipment but is still very different from being at home or having your baby with you. We also understand that being separated from your baby can be worrying and upsetting.
