Forget millennials and Gen Ys – the first generation of ‘Gen S’ Springfield-born babies are soon to arrive.
Mater Hospital Springfield will start delivering babies from May next year with referrals open from Monday 20 October 2025 for mothers living in the rapidly growing western corridor region.
The new hospital, set to open in stages from April 2026, will provide Springfield families with access to Australia’s leading Mater Mothers’ maternity services, with 1,700 babies expected to be delivered at the facility annually.
Mater Hospital Springfield’s recently-appointed Assistant Director Clinical Services for Maternity and Paediatrics, Ali Broderick, said there would be a 16-bed maternity ward, 6 birthing suites and a 16-cot Neonatal Critical Care Unit (NCCU) to deliver world-class, contemporary care to mothers, babies and families.
“Our first Mater Mothers’ patients are on their way and will mark a brand new chapter in the story of Springfield when they arrive next year,” Ms Broderick said.
“Referrals are now open for families who wish to have their babies in Springfield, and Mater will start delivering antenatal services locally from December this year.”
Mater Mothers’ Springfield would also include a Pregnancy Assessment Centre – a dedicated 24/7 emergency care unit for women who experience difficulties during their pregnancies.
The NCCU would provide round the clock, specialist care for ill and premature babies, ensuring they have the best possible start in life.
Springfield mother Jess Cragg said having maternity and paediatric services close to home would provide peace of mind for local families.
“My first daughter Issy (5) was born prematurely, so we still travel into Brisbane for specialist appointments regularly – having access to local maternity and paediatric healthcare will be a gamechanger,” Ms Cragg said.
“It can be really difficult as a young family to navigate these appointments and often means either my husband or I do have to take time off work having so far to drive. Having all of this in our backyard will be a huge relief.”
Ms Broderick said GPs could now refer maternity patients for antenatal appointments, with initial sessions to be held at Mater Mothers’ Hospital in South Brisbane before local clinics open in December.
“The catchment for Mater Mothers’ Springfield will include Greater Springfield as well as parts of Ipswich and West Moreton,” she said.
